This is a view of a semiconductor crystal being grown. I snapped the picture while peering into the furnace thru a viewport.

The crucible contains a very pure metal in liquid form heated to a few degrees above its freezing point. The cylindrical shape in the middle is slightly cooler than the melt (just below its freezing point) and has formed a resonably precise crystal. Apparently it wasn’t perfect enough as I melted it back 20 minutes later in disgust. Some faceting is visible in the middle and towards the top.
